Describe:
Media is a camera with Photoshop to create a work of media art. There is the shape of the tree trunk and in the space in the center of the tree is the line of a road trailing off into the distance. Lots of round shapes but also some geometric with the man-made vs nature. There is a mixture of different shapes. Yes, our eyes moved because of the different values, first to light then to the road in the dark center of the tree. There different textures between the different parts of the tree and the road. Analyze: The dominant principle of design is variety because of the different colors, textures and ideas. The center of interest is the road in the center of the tree. Our attention is brought to the subject by the framing of the tree trunk. The light in the background moves eye around the frame to move subject. The contrast of light background and the dark road bring your focus to the road. Interpret: This shows how nature and what man makes are all connected and flow together. It is very abstract with the location of the road and because Photoshop was used to create the unique composition. The center of the log could be larger to put more focus on the road, but the road does fade nicely into the log to create a mood. We do not personally feel connected to the piece because we have different aesthetics and a different view than what the piece is trying to portray. Evaluate: We think it is a successful piece of art. Although there are a few things we would resize or crop out the piece is visually appealing and has a subtle message. We would adjust the coloring of the photo a little and crop out the top so less of the bark is in the background. The composition is both pleasing and a little confusing but it is surrealism so it is supposed to make the view confused. (with Erin)

What imagery impacted you and why?
Right away he pictures of all of the men in the gold mines in Brazil stuck with me just because it was so shocking that all of the men were there of their own free will and the amount of them and the way they were mining even relatively recently. Could you do what Sebastião Salgado did? Why or Why not? I don't think I could travel as much with a family because I would want to see my spouse and child. I also don't think I could continue to see the atrocities of the world and be okay emotionally, but at the same time it could just make me want to continue to hopefully shock other people into action. Do you think his images changed your mind on photography? I think they showed a very shocking way that they can be used to bring attention to things and not simply be for beauty. Why do you think Sebastião Salgado used black and white in photos? To capture the mood of how there was no color for these people or animals that needed help and that in some respects the world is black and white in that there was no kind of helping because they needed immediate help. How important was the location for Sebastião Salgado pictures? Incredibly important. If he wasn't on location he never would have been able to take any of his pictures. He even talked about how the whole landscape behind the subject needed to convey something about the situation. How important was the subject matter for Sebastião Salgado pictures? Again important because his pictures were all about bringing attention to the people or things in his photos. How did Sebastião Salgado tell a story with just one image? He always made sure to get a background in the image or capture all the emotion in the photos so people see or feel what the situation is. Sam's Dramatic LightingDescribe the work: Photograph with books that have low light that creates a value of colors that are highlighted. Analyze the work: The books have a lot of contrast because of the colors and the black background and your eyes move from the bright colors further back into the composition. Interpret the work: My interpretation is the beauty in old things that seem irrelevant. The mood is dark yet it also highlights the books. The intention appears to be to highlight the wear of the books. Evaluation: Is it a successful piece of art? Why? What would you do differently to make it better? I think it is successful because it has a meaning, good balance and it is visually pleasing. The only thing I would change would be focusing in more on the bottom book so you could see more of the texture. Matt's ChoiceDescribe the work: Photograph that uses values of black on the building to create interesting shapes and contrasts. Analyze the work: I would say the dominant trait is the contrast between the light and the dark values that create an emphasis on the shapes of the architecture. Interpret the work: The mood is harsh, coming from the harsh contrast and the sharp lines of building that are highlighted. The building seems imposing. There isn't much personal voice from the artist as many people could take a picture of a building and then adjust the curves. Evaluation: It is a successful piece because the contrast is very interesting and pretty. I would create more of a focal point or a distinct subject matter to make the piece more successful. Maddie's Self-PortraitDescribe the work:
This is a photograph that uses the shape and location of the artists fave to lead to the other opposing image of the artist. Analyze the work: I think the dominant principles are the contrast in the two people through their actions, but then converge to show a whole picture of one person. Interpret the work: The mood is dark, like hiding the different sides with the dark values. The personal voice is defiantly there because it is a self-portrait so it clearly shows what the artist thinks about herself. Evaluation: I think the piece is very successful in conveying the two sides of the artist. To improve I would simply lighten the images so both faces could be seen better. Describe the work:
A photo was used to show the shape, color, and texture of the oranges. Analyze the work: The main principal of design was balance between the two orange orange halves on either side of the frame. The sides of the orange contrast because one shows the inside and one shows the inside and they have different forms. Interpret the work: The colors in the pictures make it seem happy but the orange being split an separated make it seem sad. I don't think there was a very personal voice but I think their intention was to show the difference between the inside and the outside without a distracting background. Evaluation: I think it was an okay piece of art but that it could have had a more interesting subject matter. I also would have edited the background so there weren't shadows in the corners of the frame. Describe the work:
What media was used for the artwork? Describe the content using the appropriate elements of art. This is a combination of photos that create a piece of surreal media art. There is a guy as a subject, maybe a form of a tree with some dramatic lighting used to create different values and colors. Analyze the work: The dominant principals are emphasis on the guy, as he is the foreground and he is lighter than the background. There is also contrast of values and colors between the dark background and light subject. Interpret the work: The meaning is unclear, possibly related to the subjects feelings. The mood was more real than surreal. Through the art itself there was a bit of a personal voice because the artist was also the subject matter but without his expression literally on the art I don't think the artist voice would come through as well. I think the intention was to create an image that combined reality and dream. Evaluation: I don't think the piece was successful because even though there may have been a double exposure it didn't make me feel like I was in a dream world. I would have used different pictures that made it more clear what was in background and to lead more to a dreamy mood. Describe the work:
This is a collage of photos combined in Photoshop to create one subject and image. The subject is a cat. Analyze the work: Harmony is used to show how all of the individual pictures of the parts of the cat form the whole animal. Interpret the work: There could be more incorporation of personal voice and overall mood since it is just an interesting picture a cat. The artist could have been thinking that we can't simply look at something for face value and we must see all the different parts of things, but it is unclear. Evaluation: I like the subject matter and I think that the number of photos used to make the Hockney Panorama was good because it has many different photos but the cat is still clearly seen. I would like to see more of a background so that the viewer would get more of a mood and artist voice. |
